Cotton Industry Issues and National Cotton Council Activities

Mary Ann Arnold

ABSTRACT

The National Cotton Council pays enormous dividends to its member investors who are purchasing the services of a Council professional staff well-trained in many disciplines. The Council works on an array of issues to protect U. S. cotton from over-regulation and keep the industry competitive and profitable. Those issues range from negotiations in the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade to legislation on suitable disaster payments. Boll weevil eradication, whitefly research and gin emissions are just some of the other areas where the Council and The Cotton Foundation are contributing to the industry's overall health. Although payback from Council membership is hard to quantify, the fact that 1) U.S. mill consumption was 9.1 million bales in 1991 -- highest since 1966 -- and 2) that the U.S. has added about 2.5 million bales er year to its export volume since the 1983-85 period@ is further evidence of the Council's efforts at providing a favorable business climate for industry members.
