An update on dyeing test methods to estimate the incidence of dye resistant neps in raw cotton is discussed. Test development has been directed toward finding simple dyeing equipment to allow more laboratories to run the procedure. Methods of evaluating tested samples are discussed and directions for improving evaluation are outlined. Working definitions of neps, dye resistant neps, bulk maturity and localized maturity are given.
