Worker Compensation: Louisiana's Self-Insurance Program

John Shackelford

ABSTRACT

Because of high workers compensation insurance rates for the ginning industry in Louisiana, the cotton ginners in that state have organized a self-insurance program. Prior to organizing the program, studies were conducted to determine the feasibility of self-insurance. Reinsurance was obtained to protect the program from certain risks. In the first year of operation, Louisiana's self-insurance program was more successful than its members anticipated.
