Analysis of U.S. Cotton Content of Textile Imports

Edward H. Glade, Jr.

ABSTRACT

Results of an initial USDA effort to measure the amount of U.S. raw cotton that returns to the U.S. in the form of imported textile products are presented. It was found that an estimated 23 percent of the cotton contained in U.S. textile imports during 1981 was U.S. produced raw cotton. Also, approximately 40 percent of all cotton textiles were imported from countries which purchase very little U.S. cotton.
