The Role of Ovasyn in Cotton Insect Management

Lane Smith

ABSTRACT

Amitraz (Trade name OVASYN) has been shown to share numerous characteristics with its formamidine relative, chlordimeform - long a basic cornerstone for many successful cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) pest management programs. Chlordimeform was also a key component of Heliothis pyrethroid-resistance management programs.

Studies have shown OVASYN to be a synergist of insecticides, an ovicide for Heiothis spp. eggs, a behavior modification agent for Lepidopterous insects, a miticide, an insecticide against sweet potato whitefly (Bemisa tabaci), and some activity on plant bugs (Lygus lineolaris, Palisot de Beauvois) and cotton fleahoppers (Pseudatomoscelis seriatus, Reuter). OVASYN is also safe to most beneficials fitting in well with IPM.
