Seedbed Preparation and Weed Control after Winter Cover Crops

H.R. Hurst

ABSTRACT

A split plot experiment with 4 replications was conducted during 1978-1982 on a Bosket silt loam soil to evaluate the influence of winter cover crops on seedbed preparation and on the application and performance of selected weed control practices. Main-plot treatments were vetch, wheat, and winter weeds (a conventional treatment) as cover crops. The 5 sub-plot treatments were: (1) glyphosate applied preplant to the cover crop followed by fluometuron PRE, (2) glyphosate applied preplant followed by trifluralin PPI after bedding and fluometuron PRE; (3) fluometuron PRE; (4) trifluralin PPI after bedding and fluometuron PRE; and (5) a no herbicide check. Plot identities were maintained each year.
