How Responsive Is World Cotton Area to World Prices?

Carolyn L. Whitton

ABSTRACT

Does world cotton area really respond to world cotton prices? Econometric analysis indicates world prices are an important determinant of cotton area in a few producing countries. But, most cotton producers' plantings show little response to world prices alone. Thus, in forecasting cotton prospects, world prices would be best used in combination with other factors, such as policies and prices of competing crops.
