ABSTRACT

Orthene was compared with temik as a liquid in-furrow spray at planting in research studies conducted by Dr. Gene Burris at the Northeast Research station, St. Joe, LA, and Dr. Jack Reed at two locations in Mississippi in 1988. Results indicate that orthene's efficacy on early season thrips and aphids from in-furrow applications is comparable to temik treatments. Orthene at 0.5, 0.75,and 1.0 lb. ai/a was compared with temik in-furrow with the same rates of active at the St. Joe, LA location. Stand reduction was noted in the temik treatments while Orthene treatments showed no adverse affect on stand density. Thrips and aphids control, with the exception of Orthene at the 0.5 lb.ai/a on adult thrips, was significantly higher in the orthene and temik plots than in the untreated control. Yields from Orthene and temik in-furrow treatments were comparable while significantly higher than controls that did not receive in-furrow insecticides. Orthene at 0.38, 0.56, and 0.75 lb. ai/a in-furrow was compared with temik at 0.5 lb. ai/a in Dr. Jack Reed's test at Stoneville, MS. All rates of Orthene were comparable to the temik treatment for thrip control with both insecticides showing significantly better efficacy than the untreated control for a period of three weeks after planting. By the fourth week from planting, thrips populations in the treated plots were similar to the untreated control. A rate response for Orthene was evident at four weeks after treatment, as the 0.56, and 0.75 rates of Orthene had significantly lower thrips populations than the 0.5 lb. ai/a rate. Test results indicate that Orthene has potential as a liquid in-furrow treatment for early season insect control.
