Boll Weevil Eradication - An Update

James R. Brazzel

ABSTRACT

The current boll weevil eradication program began in 1978-1980 in a trial eradication program in North Carolina and Virginia. During 1981-1982, an extensive evaluation was done and the trial was judged a success. The Position of USDA, APHIS was that the technology and logistical requirements had been demonstrated for boll weevil eradication and USDA would assist the cotton industry in this endeavor, if so requested. The cotton industry met the requirements for a cooperative program and the second increment of the eradication program was expanded into the remainder of North Carolina and all of South Carolina during the period 1983-1985. In 1985-1986, the program was expanded to include Western Arizona, Southern California, and Northwestern Mexico where heavy infestations had developed. Eradication has been completed in these areas and the program was further expanded in 1987 in parts of Georgia, Alabama, all of Florida, and in 1988 to the remainder of the Southwestern infestation in Arizona. We expect to complete eradication in these new increments in 1989.
