Preliminary Assessment of Cottonseed Damage at the Gin

S.T. Rayburn

ABSTRACT

This study evaluates cottonseed damage that occurs during the seed cotton cleaning process and lint seed separation process at the gin stand. The study consisted of 500-pound replicated lots of two cotton varieties ginned at ginning rates of 4.1 and 6.1 bales per hour on a modern high capacity gin stand. For the two varieties tested, variety A had 12.1 percent seed damage after seed cotton cleaning, whereas variety B has only 2.4 percent seed damage. Seed damage due to the gin stand was not significantly different for ginning rates or varieties and averaged 17.1 and 17.9 percent for varieties A and B, respectively.
