ABSTRACT
The double-disk planter was compared with the sweep planter for stand establishment and yield. The 1987 and 1988 test results indicated that significantly higher yields were obtained from cotton planted with the double-disk planter. The higher yield was attributed to better distribution of plants in the drill row. Coefficient of variation (c.v.) was calculated to obtain a measure of plant uniformity for each planter treatment. Coefficients of variation of 30.2 and 39.6 were obtained for double-disk and sweep type planters, respectively. The vacuum metering systems on the double-disk planter resulted in a more precise spacing of seed compared to a plate system on the sweep planter. A trend toward higher boll height was found in plants that emerged from the double-disk planter. Fiber properties were not affected by planter treatments. An average yield increase of 86 pounds of lint per acre from the double-disk open planter for the 2-year study indicate a favorable return on investment for this type planter.
