Operator Presence System for Pickers

Russell D. Copley Sr.

ABSTRACT

A new safety feature designed to reduce entanglement accidents in the picking unit area is provided on all John Deere Cotton Pickers manufactured in 1989. The new operator presence system stops the machine and picking unit motion if the operator leaves the seat for more than five seconds with the picking units engaged. A remote switch on a tether is provided which permits an operator outside the cab to run the picking mechanism at a slow speed if needed for servicing or observation.
