What Is Byssinosis and What Research Needs to Be Done?

R. Rylander

ABSTRACT

Progress in byssinosis research is reviewed with reference to symptoms and causative agents. The similarity between symptoms due to cotton dust exposure and those caused by other organic dusts is emphasized. The role of endotoxin as a causative agent for acute symptoms has become more evident but other agents notably beta, 1-3 glucans are probably important for chronic reactions.
