ABSTRACT

Cone traps baited with individual chemical components (formulated in plastic laminate slow release systems), Z-11-hexadecenal (Z-11 HDAL), Z-9-hexadecenal (Z-9 TDAL), Z-7-hexadecenal (Z-7 HDAL), hexadecenal (HDAL), Z-9-tetradecenal (Z-9 TDAL), tetradecenal (TDAL) and Z-11-hexadecenal-1-ol (Z-11 HDOL), of tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens (F.) and bollworm, H. zea (Boddie) sex pheromones did not catch male moths-of either species. All chemicals (HV-7) are reported to occur in the tobacco budworm and 4 (Z-9 TDAL, Z-11 HDAL, Z-7 HDAL, HDAL) in the bollworm (HZ-4) pheromones.

Traps baited with virgin female bollworms, tobacco budworms, HZ-4 or HV-7 synthetic bollworm or tobacco budworm sex pheromone in plastic laminate formulations did not catch male moths of the opposite species. However, the presence of virgin female tobacco budworm moths or the HV-7 synthetic plastic formulation lure, in combination with virgin female bollworm moths or the HZ-4 synthetic plastic laminate bollworm lure, reduced trap catches of bollworm male moths.

Cone traps baited with the HZ-4 bollworm lure in the plastic laminate slow-release system caught bollworm male moths for 4 weeks, whereas traps baited with the HV-7 tobacco budworm plastic laminate formulated sex pheromone caught male tobacco budworm moths effectively for 7 to 9 days. In contrast, traps baited with the HV-2 (Z-11 HDAL and Z-9 TDAL) tobacco budworm sex pheromone plastic laminate formulated lure effectively caught tobacco budwom male moths for 2 weeks.
