Highlights of the Special Session on HVI Measurements of Cotton Fiber Quality

Charles K. Bragg

ABSTRACT

This session concentrated on HVI and instrument measurements of cotton quality. Special emphasis was placed on instrument measurements of trash content and fiber strength. Progress during the past year in improving the efficiency and accuracy of HVI systems was reported. Plans for qualitative evaluation of the importance of cotton color, including light spotted cottons, were discussed. Experience with the use of video scanning trash meters in HVI systems to determine the trash content of cotton was reviewed. Measurement of the HVI strength of the newer varieties, such as DPL 90, was discussed in addition to progress in the development of other high strength varieties. Experiences in the use of HVI measurements in the marketing and processing of cotton were reported. Potential for improved processing efficiency and yarn quality through the use of high quality cottons selected by instrument measurements was discussed by representatives of the textile industry.
