Economical Control of Cotton Conveyance Noise with Viscoelastic Materials

W. Stanley Anthony

ABSTRACT

The sources of high impact noises in a full-scale cotton ginning system were identified and their contribution to the noise levels at specific locations within the gin were measured. Viscoelastic damping materials were then applied to the exterior of the noise sources and the subsequent noise reductions were about 6 dBA for each noise source. The most effective material cost $1.58/ft2 and may be applied to only the impact area and not to the entire surface area of the noise source. Pneumatic conveyance noises in a commercial gin can be reduced substantially at a cost of less than $400.
