Command® 4EC Herbicide for Cotton Weed Control

D.R. Edwards and L.D. Hatfield

ABSTRACT

Command® 4EC herbicide provides control of a wide spectrum of grass and broadleaf weeds in soybeans. Research over the past several years indicates Command has potential for use on cotton as a directed spray or layby application. Command does not cause a significant amount of cotton phytotoxicity at 1.0 lb ai/A or below, when these applications are delayed until the cotton has reached V4 (about 5 nodes). Season long control of key weeds, particularly grasses and prickly sida, is obtained at 0. 75 lb ai/A to 1.0 lb ai/A.

More recent research indicates potential for planting time applications when Command is applied in conjunction with phorate, a currently labeled cotton insecticide. Applications of Command, at planting, in combination with a phorate seed treatment or granular in-furrow applications, significantly reduces phytotoxicity to emerging cotton. This use would allow cotton producers to take further advantage of the broad spectrum, long residual weed control provided by Command.
