Expanding Opportunities for Practical Use of Insect Pheromones

R.L. Ridgway, M.N. Inscoe and J.C. Davis

ABSTRACT

The numbers of identified insect pheromones have increased rapidly since the first identification was reported in 1959, but development of practical applications of these materials for surveillance or suppression has not kept pace with early expectations. Increasing understanding of the wide range of factors that must he considered in developing applications for pheromones is leading to expanding opportunities for their use. Analysis of the evolution of insect management strategies can aid in the design and implementation of improved pest management systems.
