Differential Ginning: A Progress Report

Eugene P. Columbus

ABSTRACT

A saw-type gin stand was modified to accommodate a motor-driven auger in the seed-roll box so that the seedcotton could be moved from the left to the right side of the seed-roll box during ginning. Seedcotton was fed continuously into the left side of the stand (first one-third of the saws), partially ginned, and the lint subsequently discharged into the lint flue that was divided into three sections. The partially ginned seedcotton was ginned further in the second one third section of the stand and then moved to the final one-third section to be completely ginned. The lint from each section was kept separate and analyzed for various fiber properties. The modified gin stand produced fibers of three distinct groups with the left section producing fibers of longer length and fewer short fibers when compared to fibers from the middle and right sections.
