Changing Patterns of Asian Cotton Trade

Carolyn L. Whitton

ABSTRACT

Asia is the world's largest cotton buyer. Since 2976/77 this region experienced substantial growth in production and consumption which led to rapidly rising exports but much slower import growth. The region's not imports dropped sharply and intra-regional trade rose, displacing other suppliers of cotton to Asia, including the United States. Shifting patterns of consumption growth within the region will dictate whether non-Asian suppliers will be able to fully recover shares in this critical cotton market.
