Cotton Pest Control in the San Joaquin Valley of California with Capture® 2.0 EC Insecticide/Miticide

R.O. Kukas

ABSTRACT

Capture® 2.0 EC insecticide/miticide is a new product from FMC Corporation containing the active ingredient bifenthrin. Over several years of testing in the San Joaquin Valley (SJV), bifenthrin has demonstrated effective control of all major cotton pests. Results of 1986 trials conducted under commercial conditions in the SJV show: bifenthrin provides initial early season spider mite control equivalent to dicofol; when applied by air, bifenthrin plus cottonseed oil or Bivert® adjuvant provided control of spider mites equivalent to standards; control of various lepidopterous species was excellent for three weeks with one application of bifenthrin; and whitefly and cotton aphid control was superior with bifenthrin than with commercially available insecticides when applied by air. With this broad-spectrum of activity, bifenthrin represents a unique new tool for cotton pest management in the SJV.
