Insecticide Resistance-A Continuing Challenge

Dan F. Clower

ABSTRACT

I appreciate the opportunity to appear before you to discuss the present cotton insecticide resistance problems and I consider the invitation to participate in this symposium to be a distinct honor.

As most of you know I retired from the Louisiana State University Entomology Department Feb. 1, 1985 after over 30 years service (most of which was spent working on cotton insect control). However I remain very interested in resistance problems and during the 1985 and 1986 seasons I was involved in a cooperative project between LSU and ICI Americas. My activities were funded by ICI and I travelled throughout the U.S. cotton belt looking into control problems and, when indicated collecting Heliothis samples for resistance monitoring. Both ICI and LSU already had ongoing monitoring programs in place but the cooperative effort was initiated in 1985. This project has allowed me to work with research and extension personnel agricultural consultants and industry people throughout the cotton producing areas of the U.S. It has been quite an experience and education.
