A farm level expert system for a cotton farm, COTFLEX, has been developed; two major components are described: the Cropmix Analyzer and the Farm Policy Advisor. These components of the system provide advice regarding cropmix, government farm program participation, and crop insurance to a producer based on his financial position, farm resources, historical yields, government farm program history, production costs, expected crop yields and rices, and farm program provisions. The capabilities of these COTFLEX components are described and the results of the cropmix analyzer and farm program participation analyzer are presented for a representative, Texas Southern Blacklands cotton/ grain farm.
