Rizolex (Tolclofos-Methyl) - A Seed and In-Furrow Fungicide Treatment for Control of Cotton Seedling Diseases

J. Holland Jordan and R. Hugh Crowley

ABSTRACT

Rizolex (tolclofos-methyl) is a new fungicide developed by Velsicol Chemical Corporation for control of Damping Off (Rhizoctonia solani) in cotton. Two methods of application have been evaluated in cotton: seed treatment and in-furrow. Rizolex has been evaluated in combination with metalaxyl (Ciba-Geigy) for control of the cotton seedling disease complex (Rhizoctonia and Pythium). Data from the National Cottonseed Treatment Program show that seed treated with Rizolex + metalaxyl (3.0 + 0.25 oz ai/cwt) resulted in stand counts statistically equal to or better than the current standard of PCNB + ethazole in all ten locations in 1985. Data from the 1984 tests using the 5 oz ai/cwt rate exhibited similar results. In-furrow studies conducted throughout the Cottonbelt in 1984 and 1985 show that Rizolex at 0.33, 0.50, or 0.75 + metalaxyl at 0.25 lb ai/14,000 linear row feet resulted in final cotton stands that were equal to or above the final stand obtained with the standard treatment of PCNB + ethazole at 1.0 + 0.25lb ai/14,000 linear row feet.
