Yield and Fiber Characteristics of LibertyLink® Lines for FiberMax® Varietal Development

Michael Swindle

ABSTRACT

Bayer Crop Science is releasing the initial FiberMax LibertyLink Varieties for the 2004 season; FM 958LL, FM 966LL, FM 981LL, and FM 832LL. All LibertyLink picker lines were developed via a backcross introgression program using their conventional variety counterparts as recurrent parents. LibertyLink Cotton varieties contain the transgenic event LL25 for glufosinate-ammonium resistance. Glufosinate-ammonium is the active ingredient in the herbicide Ignite™ which is labeled for over the top use for LibertyLink cotton. LibertyLink varieties were tested extensively in internal trials (over multiple locations and regions) and compared to their recurrent parents in 2001, 2002, and 2003. Yield performance and fiber quality was maintained and in some cases improved when compared to their recurrent parents.
