A number of national agriculture and livestock groups, including the National Cotton Council, have launched a coalition to facilitate joint efforts to counter several proposed EPA initiatives aimed at reducing nutrient pollution in waterways under the Clean Water Act (CWA).

This week’s Cotton Newsline is 3 cuts.  All cuts are Keith Menchey, manager of science and environmental issues for the National Cotton Council.

Suggested Introduction 1:
A number of national agriculture and livestock groups, including the National Cotton Council, have launched a coalition to facilitate joint efforts to counter several proposed EPA initiatives aimed at reducing nutrient pollution in waterways under the Clean Water Act (CWA).  Keith Menchey, manager of science and environmental issues for the Council says the members of The Agriculture Nutrient Council (ANPC) believe the proposals could have an unnecessary negative economic impact on production agriculture.

Suggested Introduction 2:
According to Menchey cotton is not directly affected by the Chesapeake Bay Initiative but certainly has severe implications for what may come down the road.

Suggested Introduction 3:
Menchey says The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services estimates that EPA’s proposed nutrient criteria will impose $902 million to $1.6 billion in total recurring annual expenditures and revenue reductions to Florida agriculture.

Suggested Conclusion:
Menchey says these high levels of concerns are the reason these groups have come together to combine resources as well as expertise to deal with EPA on these various issues that eventually will affect cotton farms.
