Cotton Leadership Program

Program Benefits

Several leadership program alumni were recently asked to describe how they benefitted from the Cotton Leadership Program. Their comments follow:

Hope Brooks - 1996 Merchant Representative:
The Cotton Leadership Class provided us with access and opportunities that would never have been available to us as individuals. We met with congressmen and Senators, industry leaders, and business giants who would never have taken as much time as they did to answer our questions and offer us advice had we not been representing the Council. The year I spent in the Cotton Leadership Class was probably the most educational year of my life.

Bobby Greene - 1984 Ginner Representative:
It gave me the perspective on how interrelated the industry is. It’s not an industry just made up of cotton farmers and ginners – there are seven segments. When we come together as an industry we have a great deal of strength and zest for our position because we represent such diverse interests.

Robert Lacy - 1996 Cottonseed Representative:
The biggest benefit I received from the Cotton Leadership Program was learning that, no matter what segment that you represent, we are all in this thing together. We may see things differently at times, but the beauty of the National Cotton Council is that we are unanimous in the positions that we take which is something that is the envy of other Agriculture associations. During my time in the Leadership Program, I met some of the most influential people in the Cotton Industry. Today, I work together with these same people as we map out the future for this Industry. You will get out of the program as much as you are willing to put into it, so be willing to get involved anytime you see the opportunity.

Ron Nickell - 2003 Marketing Cooperative Representative:
Through the Cotton leadership program I have gone place I never could have gone on my own. National Cotton Council staff made the contacts and extremely busy people (including Congressmen and industry leaders) made time in their busy schedules for me and my classmates. What a benefit it is to go to different industry segments, talk to the decision makers and get their perspective on the issues of the day. I wish that everyone in the cotton industry could go through the leadership program. Our Industry would be the better for it.

Vern Tyson - 2002 Textile Manufacturer Representative:
The Cotton Leadership Program is truly a unique opportunity. As part of the cotton industry, we all are in tune with our own particular segment. However, we rarely get to learn anything about the other segments and their issues. The Leadership Program allows you to do this, and do it in some depth. The program was the best learning experience I ever had. And if that weren't enough, my classmates and I now share a special bond that will last for the rest of our lives.

Fred Underwood - 1983 Warehouser Representative:
It gave me exposure to all areas of the cotton industry and a be understanding of all segments. I learned how critical it is that we all work together for a common goal. I also have made friends for life with my class mates. I think of them as my extended family.
