OBJECTIVE MEASUREMENTS OF RAW COTTON - WHAT DO THEY MEAN TO THE SPINNER?

Trevor Rowe and A. Richard Horrocks

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a brief overview of the developments in objective fibre testing that have occurred in recent years and now enable cotton to be marketed based on objective quality data. Systems such as HVI, AFIS, NIR etc have enabled this revolution to take place and place the spinner in a stronger position than ever before to purchase cotton more sensibly and to process it more efficiently into yarns of predictable quality.

Major fibre parameters which relate to processibility and yarn quality factors are discussed within the context of these developments.
