ZORIAL INTERACTION WITH COTORAN OR KARMEX FOR BROADLEAF WEED CONTROL IN GEORGIA COTTON

ABSTRACT

The broadleaf weed spectrum in Georgia cotton is difficult to control with a single herbicide treatment. Sicklepod is the 2nd most troublesome and common weed in Georgia cotton. A weed control program of herbicides and cultural practices is needed to obtain satisfactory control. Replicated studies in Tifton and Plaines, GA were conducted in 1992 to investigate the interaction of Zorial (1.2) with Cotoran (1.5) or Karmex (1.0 lbs ai/a) applied preemergence. The effects of cultivation, Staple postemergence (0.063), or Cotoran + MSMA (1.0 + 2.0 lbs ai/a) post-directed following the preemergence treatments were also evaluated. Broadleaf weeds evaluated included sicklepod, prickly sida, tall morningglory, smallflower morningglory, and Florida beggarweed. Regardless of the postemergence inputs, the tankmix of Zorial + Cotoran or Zorial + Karmex resulted in better seasonal broadleaf weed control than either of the compounds applied alone. Cultivation generally improved the weed control obtained with all preemergence compounds. Overall, broadleaf weed control was best achieved by applying a tankmix of Zorial + Cotoran (1.2 + 1.5 lbs ai/a) or Zorial + Karmex (1.2 + l.0 lbs ai/a) followed by a cultivation or post-directed application of Cotoran + MSMA (1.0 +2.0 lbs ai/a). These treatments also provided the highest cotton yields. Staple postemergence provided good control of smallflower morningglory, prickly sida, and Florida beggarweed, but was not as effective on sicklepod or tall morningglory. Depending on the weed spectrum and environmental conditions present, an effective preemergence herbicide program such as Zorial + Cotoran or Zoriat + Karmex followed by a single cultivation may eliminate the need for postemergence herbicide applications. Postemergence treatment, post- directed treatments or cultivation did not provide acceptable weed control unless it was preceded by a preemergence treatment.
