Early Season Production Management Practices: Insects

Ronald H. Smith

ABSTRACT

Several pests may damage cotton in the early season. One of the most common being the Lygus complex which is a key pest in the mid-south. Research has shown that controls result in earlier maturity and often yield increases. Some growers have gone to automatic applications to prevent any plant bug damage. Many entomologists do not feel that this is a sound approach due to the potential of creating secondary pests problems and encouraging Heliothis resistance to pyrethroids. Some pros and cons of the treatment strategy for plant bugs will be discussed, along with some suggestions for compromise on this issue.
