The Effect of Picker Pad Composition on Contamination of Cotton

Charles K. Bragg, Henry H. Perkins, Jr., and Carolyn L. Simpson

ABSTRACT

Cotton picker spindle doffer pads made from five different materials were used in harvesting cotton by standard procedures. Spindles were adjusted deliberately to abrade material from the doffer pads. The pad material was further abraded to form smaller particles for measures of friability. Particles were hand mixed with cotton lint, and the lint was processed into fabric on standard textile equipment. The fabric was then dyed and inspected to determine if the abraded doffer pad particles remained in the fabric.Doffer pad particles were not completely removed by textile processing; however, there were differences in the particle counts in the fabrics which indicate that picker pad composition affects the ease of particle removal.
