Fruiting Position Influence on Yield Components of Cotton Bolls. II. Cottonseed Oil Content

ABSTRACT

The availability of individual cotton bolls collected at different fruiting positions presented a great opportunity to investigate the relationship between fruiting position and the different components of cottonseed. Seed samples from single bolls at different fruiting positions were analyzed for oil content using an NMR method. This is a fast and nondestructive method permitting the use of small samples (0.8gm-1.5gm). Results indicate that seed oil content varies with the fruiting position. The lower the fruiting position on the main stem, and the closer to the main stem, the higher the oil content of the seed.
