Half a Century Dynamics and Control of Cotton Diseases: Dynamics of Cotton Diseases and Their Control

K.M. El-Zik

ABSTRACT

The Cotton Disease Council, organized in 1936 was the first and thereby the oldest of the Beltwide Technical Conferences. The Council was organized to provide a means for exchange of information among scientists, addressing problems common to different states and regions across the cotton belt, and working together to solve problems. In addition, the Council membership cooperates with colleagues from other conferences and disciplines. Cotton pathologists comprising the membership of the Cotton Disease Council, have contributed greatly in identifying problems and providing solutions for the control of diseases caused by both biotic and abiotic agents. For the past 50 years, the special committees of the Cotton Disease Council have reflected the important areas of cotton diseases and their control that are being investigated.

We have made a dramatic, powerful and dynamic shift in approaches during the past 50 years. We used to take snapshots of our subjects, now we make movies, use electron microscopy and computer images. We used to describe observations, now we discuss mechanisms. We use quantitative measurements to describe the rate of disease development with time. Some original ideas have emerged during the past 50 years ranging from applied to basic research.
