Cotton Dust and Bracts as Releasers of Arachidonate Metabolites from Alveolar Macrophages

N. El-Mahdy, P.J. Nicholls, R.C. Brown, and A. Poole

ABSTRACT

Tritiated arachidonic acid was well taken up by guinea pig and rat alveolar macrophages in vitro. Incubation of these loaded cells with cotton and bract dusts caused the release of tritiated products into the medium. The effect was dose- and time-dependent. A similar order of activity was demonstrated to reside in the aqueous-soluble fraction of these dusts.
