Gin Safety - The Owner/Manager's Responsibility

Ronald P. Shanoian

ABSTRACT

What responsibilities do owner/managers have to maintain a safe and healthful place of employment for their employees? How have Federal and State regulations influenced the ginning industry? What are the economic affects of a good safety program? Can the seven-day work week be shorter and maintain production? An ongoing safety program can reduce worker's compensation costs and minimize potential litigations. The key points in a good safety program, including incentives, will be discussed. Results of a six year safety study conducted by the California Cotton Ginners Association will be presented, along with a review of the J.G. Boswell Company's gin safety program.
