Response of Cotton to Soil Applications of Propiconazol at Several Rates and Placement Distances

ABSTRACT

The response of cotton seedlings to the granular fungicide propiconazol was tested in the greenhouse. A 2.5% granular formulation was applied to Houston Black Clay at the time of planting. Four different rates were tested, 0.312, 0.625, 1.25, and 2.5 kg/ ha. Each rate of the chemical was also tested at three different distances from the seed. The fungicide was placed directly in the furrow, 2.5 and 5.0 cm from the seed. Plant response was determined three weeks after planting by measuring the height of the plants. As compared to nontreated control plants, it was demonstrated that if propiconazol is placed directly in the furrow a significant reduction of plant height will occur with all rates tested. The rates 0.312, 0.625 and 1.25 gave no significant re duction in growth if placed 2.5 or 5.0 cm from the seed. A bioassay was later performed on leaf, stem, and root tissue and it gave a positive indication that propiconazol posses systemic activity in cotton.
