Growth Regulating Effect of Chlordimeform in Cotton

James B. Weaver, Jr. and Harbans Lal Bhardwaj

ABSTRACT

Chlordimeform (Galecron/Fundal) is currently being used by some farmers in the eastern half of the cotton belt as a "yield enhancer". The chemical is usually applied beginning with the appearance of the first pinhead squares for 4 or 5 weekly applications at a rate of 0.125 pounds ai/A. Yield response from this treatment has ranged from a yield loss up to very significant increases. The overall average yield increase has been approximately 60 to 70 pounds/A.

There has been a considerable diversity of opinion as to the mode of action of chlordimeform with several individuals assuming insect control as the primary factor. However, chlordimeform has not been shown to be toxic to insects that attack young cotton. It has been reported to prevent the hatching of some Lygus sp. eggs.

In previous field experiments with chlordimeform as a yield enhancer we observed differences in petiole size and concentration of NO3 and P in cotton petioles as compared with untreated plots. However, the data over years and locations was not consistent nor was yield response among genotypes.
