ABSTRACT

As fiber technology changes over time it is increasingly important to be aware of changes in cotton quality. From the standpoint of plant breeders it is important to know how fiber quality changes over time in response to breeding programs. This study reports on data collected over a twenty year period at the LSU cotton fiber testing laboratory on cotton quality. The purpose of the study was to determine changes in cotton quality over the twenty year period. Results of the study indicated that over time there has beep a general Improvement in the overall quality of cotton fibers in Louisiana. This improvement has occurred in all areas of the state. Quality was measured in terms of fiber length, fiber uniformity, fiber fineness, and fiber strength.
