An Economic Analysis of Cotton Variety Selection in Louisiana

Abiodun O. Ojemakinde and Kenneth W. Paxton

ABSTRACT

This study examines the influence of quality factors on variety selection in Louisiana. A model was developed to estimate the relative profitability of cotton varieties. This model combines cotton yield and quality factors into a single indicator of value. Analysis of variance techniques was used to partition differences In cotton quality and yield due to variety, time, production area within the state, and interactions among these factors. The results indicated that while these factors had an impact on yield and quality, their impact on quality was rather small. In general, cotton varieties selected by Louisiana cotton producers had good yields and were of high quality during the study period. Results of the study did not suggest any significant change in varieties for Louisiana cotton producers.
