Performance of Five Short-Season Pima Genotypes Under Two Management Regimes

ABSTRACT

Late season water application and insect control costs are placing increasing burdens upon cotton growers of the southwest. Short season management strategies and early maturing genotypes offer an alternative and have been extensively investigated in upland (Gossypium hirsutum L.) cotton. This study was conducted to: 1) determine whether short season management strategies can be successfully employed in Pima (G. barbadense L.) cotton and 2) to determine whether earliness can be increased in new Pima genotypes without significantly decreasing yield potentials. Six genotypes, including a full season (PS-7)and short season (P62)check, were grown in replicated tests under standard and short season regimes in 1993 and 1994. Plant growth measurements, sequential harvest yields, and fiber property data were collected. There was no yield advantage to the longer standard practise regime in either year. There was no treatment by genotype interaction - indicating that the yield of the longer season PS-7 check did not suffer from the short season regimen. Plant growth measurements indicated that the earlier maturing genotypes cutout at approximately 2760 HU after planting, placing the genotypes in the midseason category by definitions commonly utilized with upland cotton. Two genotypes (8711 and 91-209) were significantly earlier than PS-7 on the various harvest dates of the sequential harvest and had greater cumulative yields than PS-7 at final harvest. This was in contrast to the short season P62 check, which was also significantly earlier than PS-7 but displayed significantly lower yield potential. The test indicated that benefits can be achieved under short season regimes using currently available genotypes, and that earlier maturity can be achieved in Pima genotypes without significantly affecting yield potential.
