Cotton Short Fiber: Measurement Problems

J. D. Bargeron

ABSTRACT

The Peyer-MCI HVI systems will rapidly determine the short fiber content of a cotton. The precision of the measurement is within plus or minus two percent short fiber. The HVI systems can reliably rank cottons in order of their short fiber within a laboratory. However the variation between laboratories is large. The lack of short fiber calibration cottons and possible variations in sample preparation between HVI systems are likely the sources of these variations.
