Control of the Budworm-Bollworm Complex in South Carolina

M. J. Sullivan and T. W. Smith, Jr.

ABSTRACT

There are two distinct moth flights in South Carolina cotton, tobacco budworm - Heliothis virescens (June) and cotton bollworm - Helicoverpa zea (July-Aug.). Biological insecticides, particularly when used in combination with an ovicide, will adequately control early season budworm populations. Mid and late season bollworm populations require pyrethroid insecticide applications. All pyrethroids tested over a four year period provided adequate bollworm control when applied properly at recommended rates according to South Carolina treatment thresholds.
