Cultivar Yields as Influenced by Inter Row Competition

R.R. Bridge and M.L. Laster

ABSTRACT

Cultivar yields as influenced by inter row competition were measured on five cotton cultivars at Stoneville for a two year period (1982 and 1983). The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of breeding cotton for skip-row production systems. Cultivars were planted in a 4 x 4 skip-row pattern and yield comparisons were made on inside versus outside rows. The F values for the year x cultivar, cultivar x pattern (inside vs. outside), and cultivar x pattern x year were nonsignificant being 0.90, 0.71, and 0.44, respectively. Only the pattern x year interaction was significant. This interaction was probably due to the amount and distribution of rainfall. These data indicate that it would not be feasible to initiate a breeding program to develop cultivars for skip-row production systems.
