Design™ - A New Biological Insecticide

Thomas Bridges

ABSTRACT

Design, a new patented transcongugated Bacillus thuringiensis ( B.t.), was registered for use in cotton and soybeans in 1993. Design is a combination of two highly effective strains of B.t., kurstaki and aizawai. The kurstaki strain offers superior control of budworms, bollworms and loopers, while the aizawai effectively controls armyworms.

Design is effective when used alone at 1.0 to 2.0 lbs./A. In combination with contact insecticides, rates of 0.25 to 0.75 lb./A are effective.

Design is packaged in 1.0 lb. water soluble pouches. This convenient packaging makes mixing and disposal easier. Design is compatible with most insecticides, fungicides, and spray adjuvants.

Ingredients in the Design formulation provide protection from U.V. light and from wash-off by rain.

During the 1993 season, over one-half million acres were successfully treated with Design.
