Genetic Analysis of Earliness in Upland Cotton II. Yield and Fiber Properties

G.A. Niles and Salvador Godoy

ABSTRACT

Lint yield showed relatively little additive variance and low heritability, whereas lint percentage showed the opposite. Highest yields were shown by the least determinate and slowest-maturing genotypes; yields generally decreased as determinacy increased and rate of maturity accelerated. Except for date of first open boll, components of earliness showed no association with yield. Higher values for fiber length, micronaire, and strength were noted as yield increased. Early-rapid fruiting and maturity were associated with reductions of fiber length, length uniformity, micronaire, strength, and elongation.
