ABSTRACT

Ten studies conducted over a 3-year period of sampling of the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, showed that as the season progressed, aphid numbers increased from top to bottom of the cotton plant. Specific sampling methods are recommended for the time of year and phenological development of the cotton plant and include whole plant counts (first two weeks after plant emergence), fourth fully-expanded leaf from terminal (3-5 weeks after emergence), first main stem green leaf about one-third distance from terminal (weeks 6-9), and first main stem green leaf above first fruiting branch above ground (rest of season).
