A major source of variation among cotton cultivars is plant maturity, which is associated with variation in plant structure and fruiting behavior. COTMAP (an end-of-season plant mapping technique) and NAWF (measurement of nodes above first position white flower) are relatively new methods of monitoring cotton plants. This study was conducted to evaluate the relationships of COTMAP and NAWF parameters on contrasting cotton cultivars grown in Arkansas. Data included sequential counts of NAWF from flowering to cutout and COTMAP measured after defoliation for either six or seven cultivars within four sites of the Arkansas Cotton Variety Test in 1989 through 1991. Regression analysis of the NAWF counts were used to calculate NAWF at 60 days from planting (an indicator of early season plant vigor) and days to NAWF=5 (an indicator of plant maturity). Since NAWF was relatively low at first flower and did not decline linearly in the 1991 tests, the calculated NAWF variables were invalid. Correlation coefficients of days to NAWF=5 with NAWF at 60 days, all COTMAP variables, and lint yield were then determined within each location for the 1989 and 1990 tests. Late maturity, as indicated by increased days to NAWF = 5, was consistently related to increased early season growth, large plant structure (number of nodes and branches and plant height), and low boll retention in early set positions. Inconsistent relationships of days to NAWF=5 with yield and boll distribution variables were found. These relationships are similar to findings in previous work using other measurements of plant maturity. Thus, with caution with regard to early values and linear decline of NAWF, days to NAWF=5 is a valid measurement of plant maturity. Additional work will focus on variables associated with maturity within individual cultivars.
