Special Session: Current Concerns and Key Questions in Organic Dust Research-Physiological Endpoints of Byssinosis and Measurement of Constituents in Dust

Robert R. Jacobs

ABSTRACT

What do we need to do in order to continue our work on finding a solution to byssinosis? Today we want to focus, if time permits, on two areas. The first is what are the physiological endpoints that we are finding in epidemiologic studies of organic dust-induced diseases? How do we measure these endpoints in a clinical or animal model study? How do we predict risk? Then, time permitting we would like to talk about measurement of constituents in organic dusts and some of the associated problems. Dr. Pickering will lead the discussion for the first portion of our session today and I will lead the second portion. I encourage each of you to participate. Let's explore some different things today. I know that we all have directions that we are already committed to in our research, but it certainly helps to consider new ideas.
