Effect of Modular Storage on the Incidence of Aspergillus Flavus Contamination of Seed Cotton in Mississippi in 1992: A Preliminary Report

W.E. Batson, Jr. and D.H. Newman

ABSTRACT

Aflatoxin contamination of seed has long been recognized as a problem for the cottonseed industry in and Western Arizona and Southern California. Within recent years, the cottonseed industry has realized that aflatoxin contamination can occur sporadically over a much wider area of the cottonbelt. This survey and others in the Mid-South have identified superficial populations of Aspergillus flavus on seed cotton. This preliminary study also reports A. flavus seed infection and aflatoxin contamination of seed in moduled seed cotton. There was an increase of A. flavus contamination of seed cotton inside a contaminated module within one week of storage.
