Nematode Distribution and Importance in the United States

Don Blasingame

ABSTRACT

Cotton (Gossypium spp.) is host to numerous plant parasitic nematodes. State surveys conducted since 1989 reveal that the root-knot (Meloidogyne incognita), lance (Hoplolaimus galeatus), and reniform (Rotylenchulus reniformis) nematodes are widespread throughout most of the cotton belt and in many areas above threshold areas. The root-knot nematode was found in most areas where cotton is grown. The lance nematode was a problem in the Southeast. The reniform nematode was found in all locations except the far West.
